Plastic Omnium @ IPCEI Hy2Tech
Plastic Omnium’s division New Energies is participating in the IPCEI Hy2Tech. Prepared by fifteen Member States, this Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEIs) was approved by the Commission under EU State aid rule in 2022. The project will provide up to €5.4 billion in public funding, which is expected to unlock additional €8.8 billion in private investments.
IPCEI Hy2Tech covers a wide part of the hydrogen technology value chain including the generation of hydrogen, fuel cell technology, storage and distribution of hydrogen and lastly end-users application, in particular in the mobility sector.
Plastic Omnium’s New Energies is represented in three IPCEIs with its sites located in Compiegne area (FR), Wels (AT), Dettingen (DE) and among 35 other companies amounting to a total of 41 projects.

Hydrogen Generation Technology
Plastic Omnium develops and industrializes a next generation hydrogen tank offer for commercial and heavy-duty vehicles and develops an innovative next generation conformable tank design.
The Group’s new Lachelle (in Compiègne area, France) plant is under construction since July 2023, with an expected delivery date in August 2024 and a start of production for serial delivery of the complete process in September 2025.
The Group’s activity in Austria, New Energies Wels, will develop a series-ready hydrogen fuel cell system for heavy duty vehicle applications (trucks, buses, etc.) as well as the necessary production process. Innovations in components, in the process and in the operating strategy of the fuel cell should increase efficiency, service life and environmental friendliness in the life cycle. Through the application and transfer of the demanding manufacturing processes of the automotive industry, the use of modern automation and digitization, the objective is to significantly reduce both the manufacturing costs and the development time.
New Energies Wels contributes to the objectives of the IPCEI Hy2Tech by providing a key technology that is developed and made in Europe. The project provides a significant contribution to the transformation within the Heavy-Duty mobility sector towards zero emission transport and the uptake of renewable energy.
By enabling the transformation to renewable and clean fuels in a hard to abate sector, the project also contributes to the urgent decarbonization of mobility in Europe.
The joint venture EKPO in Germany will develop and industrialize an innovative next generation heavy-duty fuel cell stack.
The project is part of a large European hydrogen ecosystem through the involvement of research partners, component and technology suppliers and OEMs from several EU member states.
